Lê Hoàng Nguyên grew up as a proud Republican from Houston, Texas who used his personal funds after the death of George Floyd to put up a Black Lives Matter billboard in the Southwest Area of Houston, Texas (also known as Bellaire or Chinatown) in an effort to support the fight against racism. In the months following his action he faced heavy backlash from his Southwest Houston community, which has the highest concentration of Vietnamese immigrants and is the major hub for Vietnamese businesses.
