NOIRLab - A Record Setting Gamma Ray Burst
The 365 Days of Astronomy - A podcast by 365DaysOfAstronomy.org
Gamma Ray bursts are some of the most powerful explosions observed in the cosmos and frequently herald the birth of a new black hole. A recent gamma ray burst, GRB 221009A, appears to be the brightest of all time and was observed very quickly by multiple instruments. In this podcast, Jillian Rastinejad discusses the discovery of this gamma ray burst and the follow up observations with the Gemini International Observatory. Bios: - Rob Sparks is in the Communications, Education and Engagement group at NSF’s NOIRLab in Tucson, Arizona.. - Jillian Rastinejad is a PhD student at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She utilizes many of the world’s largest optical telescopes in her quest to better understand the sources of the Universe’s most powerful explosions, gamma-ray bursts. When she’s not chasing gamma-ray bursts, Jillian enjoys going for runs on Lake Michigan and exploring Chicago’s many neighborhoods.
