BPA is short for bisphenol A, and this is an industrial chemical used in plastics. This is not a new chemical, BPA was first synthesized in 1891 and beginning in the 1950s this chemical was used in polycarbonate plastics which are used in a lot of food and drink packaging. BPA is also used in epoxy resins, like the coatings you find inside of most canned food, bottle tops. Some other unexpected places you may find BPA is in receipts, movie tickets, and even baby toys. Exposure to BPA is a concern because it is an endocrine disruptor. Your endocrine system is your hormone system and BPA disrupts this by mimicing estrogen. You know hormones are a big deal, especially for pregnancy and hormones drive practically every process in your body. Listen to this episode to learn how BPA can affect you and your baby, whether BPA is something you should be avoiding, and how you can reduce your expsoure to it during your pregnancy and after your baby is born.
