I once heard John Sexton say that any road that has the word "canyon" in it is a worthy road to explore for photographs. It's a humorous line, but I've found it to be mostly true. From my experience, there are other words that lead to great photographs. Look for locations that are described as meadow, creek, prairie, refuge, or scenic corridor. Conversely, here are ones that almost never turn out well: overlook, lake, and worst of all is "photo spot."
