In Ireland 1 in 6 couples will experience some form of fertility challenge – with secondary infertility accounting for 60 percent of this. So you see, if you are trying to conceive and it’s not happening, please know that you’re not alone.

This February on everymum we are putting our focus on caring for our fertility – physically, mentally and emotionally – because it matters so much and we believe that if we know more, talk more we can all support each other more.

If you’ve been trying for 12 months and are under 35 or trying for 6 months and over 35 it’s a really good idea to start thinking about getting some answers – even if it just means you can feel some reassurance. We know that you might feel scared or intimidated, but really the best place to start is by talking to your GP. So we asked Dr. Deirdre Lundy a GP specialising in Women’s Health for over 30 years to join us on this week’s special fertility matters episode.

Originally from the US Deirdre attended UCD medical school and never went back.

She has worked for all the family planning clinics around Dublin, for the Irish College of General Practitioners in the Women’s Health department, is a member of the “Ask the “Experts” panel for GPBuddy and started and continues to works in the GP gynaecology clinics in the Rotunda, Coombe and National Maternity Hospitals. A regular guest on Elaine on Virgin Media One and part of the team at the Bray Women’s Clinic, Dr. Deirdre knows what we all need to know about our bodies and our fertility and here she shares this information with us all so that we can feel less in the dark– because our fertility matters.

In this episode we learn

  • Why a GP can be the best starting place
  • The simple blood tests that can tell you a lot – Day 21 Progesterone, FSH, LH, AMH
  • Why it’s so important to test our partners fertility
  • The impact undiagnosed STI’s are having on our fertility
  • How IVF works and when couples should take this big step
  • Fertility success abroad
  • And why couples shouldn’t wait and worry but to take that first move and talk about their fertility to a Dr and to the people who love them.
