In this episode of everymum the podcast we sit down and talk to the inspirational Irish athlete Derval O’Rourke about how she has gone from running at the Olympics and World Championships to now running the marathon that is motherhood.

Derval is a mum of 2 and passionate about supporting women stay fit and nourished with her health programme and website derval.ie and as a coach on RTE’s Ireland’s Fittest Family.

Being an athlete has thought Derval the benefits of looking after our bodies, of allowing ourselves proper rest and care and that becoming a mother has thought her that women need better and more support during this intense phase of their lives – especially when it comes to breastfeeding and all the benefits it brings.

We chat about how our identities can be rocked once we become mums. How Derval has had to accept that giving 70%-80% of herself right now is more than enough. How doing a TV shoot with a 3 month old can be overwhelming but achievable and how no matter how strong, fit or able you are – sometimes a car seat can literally beat you.

We hope this episode helps anyone who is running their own motherhood marathon and reminds us all to take care of ourselves too.
