Today on The Deep Cut, host John Rocha welcomes Oscar nominated director Feras Fayyad (“Last Men in Aleppo”) to discuss his newest documentary, THE CAVE. The film delivers an unflinching story of the Syrian war. For besieged civilians, hope and safety lie underground inside the subterranean hospital known as the Cave, where pediatrician and managing physician Dr. Amani Ballour and her colleagues Samaher and Dr. Alaa have claimed their right to work as equals alongside their male counterparts, doing their jobs in a way that would be unthinkable in the oppressively patriarchal culture that exists above. The Cave paints a stirring portrait of courage, resilience and female solidarity. John and Fayyad discuss how the documentary came about, how close he came to being imprisoned again or bombed by the Asaad regime, why he believes this documentary is important to showing what is happening in Syria and what positivity and humanity is still possible amidst all this evil. Fayyad also updates us on what happened to the featured doctors after he finished his documentary. It’s a wide open, engaging, harrowing and informative discussion with one of the best documentary directors working today.
