Black teachers were able to keep me in line, but also inspired. - Mr. Marc Powers, Poetry, African American Literature, A.P. Theory Instructor Who teaches our stories? What inspires you? It’s a different world, but it doesn’t mean that students are less brilliant than we were. Beginning his teaching career at Howard University, Mr. Marc Powers reflects on how he has evolved from a college teaching assistant into a high school classroom teacher. His childhood experiences with diverse classmates helped shape his perspective into one that sees the commonalities and also understands the differences among his students, especially as he navigates through the generation gap. On today’s episode, Mr. Powers walks us through his favorite literary and musical works, making connections between lynchings in literature and what students experience in real life.
