Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Omahyra Mota moved to Queens, New York at the age of 10 with her siblings, her mum and her grandmother. At the age of 15 her mum picked up a disposable camera and took pictures of Omahrya in her swimsuit. She added Omahyra’s measurements to the back of the photos and sent them to every single agency in New York. Only one agency gave a response and that one was enough to see Omahyra go on to walk the runway for the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, Moschino, Gucci, Oscar de la Renta and many, many more. In this episode I look back over Omahyra’s two decade long career and discuss the power and strength she found in embracing her androgynous style. I’d love to know if you’ve heard of Omahrya before or do you have another favourite androgynous model? Let me know if you think someone else deserves their own podcast! You can get in touch anytime over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or feel free to email me [email protected].
