Can I Start Solid Foods Before My Baby is 6 Months?

Baby-Led Weaning with Katie Ferraro - A podcast by Katie Ferraro

Categorie:

#9: What if my baby is showing the signs of readiness to feed by is not 6 months old yet? Can I start solid foods before my baby is 6 months old? In this episode I explain why starting solid foods prior to 6 months is not only unnecessary from a nutrition standpoint, but can also be dangerous.

Breastmilk and/or formula will meet your baby’s needs up until about 6 months of age. When your baby is then showing the other signs of readiness to feed, it’s time to start offering complementary or weaning foods.

In this episode I explain why the 6-month mark really matters when it comes to nutrition and safety. If you are getting pressure to start solid foods early, I explain why big babies don’t need to start food early, why small babies don’t need to start food early and how starting solid foods early will not help your baby sleep through the night!

There are a few rare instances when it is advised for babies to start solid foods prior to 6 months of age and that is for medical reasons. This episode covers iron and how iron needs change as your baby approaches the time to start solid foods.
